I was born at the tail end of Communism in Bulgaria to a family of rebels.
My early childhood was one of poverty - dinner-less nights, heated bricks in bed to keep warm at night, worn-off unfitted clothing and much more, but it was also a childhood full of Mystery and Grace. Great-grandma and grandma’s lessons in love for land, plant medicine & the spirit world, auntie’s teaching on healing, breaking or making spells, people reading and prophecy telling. Life’s heartbeat was one of wonder and enchantment.
Fast-forward to today: After walking through perils and trials, I found my feet and planted roots in English soil, and this wilderness beat from my childhood has become the backbone of who I am today.
I trained as an artist at Central Saint Martins, then as an art therapist with AAT and as a therapeutic yoga practitioner with YSC. Now, I am the founder and COO of a Charity - MahaDevi Yoga Centre.
Where does dance fit in this?
It started with being mesmerised by the Bulgarian Animist tradition of the Kukerite, then grew to partaking in traditional folk dance and then expanded into contemporary dance with an amateur theatre group I was part of in my youth.
In 2014, I found my feet on a 5Rhythms dance floor. This is when and where it all magnificently fell apart before falling back into place and making sense. There was no more hiding, no more pretence - the backbone of my being, the raw wilderness within, was living and breathing again. The All of me was allowed to be, it was pulsing and roaring. From this point on, I knew there was no going back, only going forward. You see it is in our bones, blood and breath - the beat, the rhythm, the Song of Songs. The Song of Life. Dance it. It is your birthright. This is how we plug back to Source. This is how we wake up. This is how we become alive again. This is how we find answers and resolutions. This is how we commune. Our ancestors did it. We can do it, too. And truly, for me, nothing else quite matches it. So let this be an open invitation to shake off the cobwebs, rattle those bones, let that breath flow and let these feet find their beat. Let Life In.
